A magical Dar hidden in plain sight

Marrakech is a mysterious city known for its exciting secrets. And then there is this small house or Dar to rent, which does something deeply fun, fashionable and funky right in the heart of the elegant action in the thrilling medina.

From the roof terrace in the chic neighborhood of Dar El Bacha, the view stretches from Dar Tizwa unapologetically towards the King’s palace, as if it had been invited. It’s the sort of vantage point that makes you feel faintly important, even if you’ve done nothing to deserve it.

Once a traditional four-bedroom Moroccan family home, it has been reimagined with a wink towards futurism. Elegant, yes, but also with a sense of mischief. This is not heritage preserved under glass; its heritage that’s had a cocktail and loosened its collar. A private hideaway that is, rather delightfully and not hiding at all. You can find it easily though it still feels like you’ve discovered something others haven’t.

The house can be rented in two moods: an intimate two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment with sole dominion over its roof terrace, dining room, generous salon and kitchen; Or, should you wish to gather a more decadent crowd, as the full four-bedroom house once the doors are flung open to the apartment downstairs.

And a gentle warning: if you’re looking for earnest tradition, you’ll need to look elsewhere. This is Marrakech, reinterpreted with style, and just enough irreverence and more than a twist of joy.

Right in the middle of things. But concealed.

Dar El Bacha is arguably the city’s most self-assured neighbourhoods, with the best coffee shop in the world, elegant (local) designer shops, museums and the coolest new restaurant in town, this four-bedroom Dar dispenses with the usual theatre of being lost. You arrive by car. To the door. Like an adult. Luggage intact, dignity preserved, no negotiations with multiple alleyways that appear to have been designed by an indecisive drunken cat. And yet, within a few minutes you can stroll, and you’re in the thick of it—threading into the souks, drifting towards the great theatrical circus of Jemaa el-Fnaa, where the city performs itself daily with smoke, noise and a certain amount of culinary bravado.

Tiles, Technicolour, and a Sense of Humour

This house refuses to follow a rule book. Yes, Dar Tizwa speaks fluent Moroccan: zellige tiles, geometry that could induce mild hypnosis, the choreography of light and shade, but it does so with a raised eyebrow. The colours are vivid, occasionally bordering on mischievous. The patterns refuse to behave. Tradition is not discarded, so much as cheerfully reinterpreted.
Where most apartments to rent in Marrakech choose to cascade with tradition, Dar Tizwa explodes without restraint.
It is, in short, a modern dar with a personality. And in a city where beauty is often taken very seriously indeed, it feels rather refreshing in its approach.
Dar Tizwa has decided to have a little fun.
